The people who were living in the Porur lake area were forcefully evicted without any prior notification or announcement from 23 to 25 of Nov’06. Though the Government has provided rehabilitation and replacement area in Nallur and Kudapakkam villages in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts respectively, still the replacement places lack basic facilities for life such as electricity, road, transportation, free water distribution, school, proper sanitation facilities , burial ground etc. the displacement area is not safe enough for human living. The main disadvantage about the displacement area is that it is 28 km far away from city and most of the people were dependent on urban employment.
It is two years completed that the people have been shifted from Porur lake area to Kudapakkam and Nallur respectively. Still people are struggling without basic facilities and more over frequent fire accidents which is shocking and adding fuel to the agony of the people. Among the evictees from Porur only few have got the displacement still many have not yet got the relocation. 1000 members have got the token for replacement still they have not provided with relocation.

So we along with Amnesty International have planned for a demonstration at Chepauk opposite to State guest house on the occasion of “Poverty Eradication Day” on 17th Oct’08to bring a notice to the authorities to take immediate measures to attend the needs of these people. The chief guest for the demonstration will be Mr.Murthy, Member of Parliament (Former – Union Joint Minister for Railways) and Mr.Tirukachur Aarumugam, MLA, Chengalpattu Constituency.

Actions requested from the Government
People those who did not receive relocation, should be given immediately.
Children, who are unable to attend schools, should be provided the facility of attending school.
People who are living at relocation should be provided with basic facilities like water distribution, free electricity, proper sanitation, health care etc.
Inorder to make the traveling trouble-free, proper road and bus arrangement need to be provided.
People who are living at relocation area should be given employment guarantee.
People who are living at Nallur and Kudapakkam in relocation area should be given permanent shelter and their houses should be constructed.
People more than 1000 having token has not yet received the relocation. So Government should take immediate action to by providing relocation for these people.
People who have not received the tokens and relocation, Government should take steps to give relocation.
Patta has to be given for the land given to the evictees in their relocation area.
People should be provided with Voter ID and Ration card.
For the past two years Government has not taken any steps to meet to the needs of these people so it should not delay in action and make an arrangement to build houses at Porur lake itself under Tamilnadu Housing Board Corporation.
