October 2017, the World Zero Evictions Days in Resistance and Solidarity!
Because the inhabitants of the world have passion and talent for constructing another world and better, we call on them to participate in the World Zero Eviction Days, all over the globe, an essential step of joint agenda established by the People's Social Forum Resistance Habitat III.
The Days will begin by the 6th Session of the International Tribunal on Evictions (Venice, Italy, 28-30 September 2017), focussed on evictions caused by tourism, since this is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
The central focus is the struggle against expulsions, evictions, the foreclosures, the land grabbing, for the defense of territories and against the persecution of activists: these matters involve all the inhabitants, both urban and rural.
The targets are the neoliberal policies: the roots of the urban and global crisis, corruption and real estate and land speculation, they exclude more than a billion people from a home and throw tens of millions more out on the street every year.
Building alongside the success of World Days is the best way to strengthen local battles and their impact on land and housing politics, thanks to global solidarity.
We propose to converge your initiatives during the whole month of October to:
- Denounce the threats of forced evictions, demolitions, land grabbing, violences against activists using the online Zero Evictions Alert
- Block evictions
- “Requisition” empty housing
- Fight against austerity plans based on neoliberal policies to overcome the crisis
- Fight privatization and the deregulation of the housing and land sector
- and more ...
We propose that local authorities and supporting governments should coordinate action with the movements in order to:
- Declare their territory “eviction-free zones”
- Approve coordinated action plans for “zero evictions and right to housing, land and city”
- Set up Popular Funds for Land and Housing
- and more ...
These proposals should form part of local, national and regional platforms and be launched through rallies, sit-in, press conferences, delegations, forums, broadcasts and whatever other means may serve to give voice to those whose rights to housing, land, city have been violated.
Then, we will decide together the next steps.
